Peak height vs. delay time in the pump-modulated turn-on of a class B laser

Abstract

As opposed to those laser (class A) for which transient behavior was historically studied [1]. Class B lasers are characterized by a peak in the output power that follows a rather long delay compared to the cavity roundtrip time when the laser is started by a sudden change of the pump parameter. Analytical studies of the statistical properties of this system predict that the distributions of points representing peak height versus delay time will have a positive slope in the presence of additive noise [2]. Previous measurements have confirmed these predictions and noted the influence of different kinds of noise on the statistical distributions [3].
