Abstract

It has been recently suggested that an erbium-doped fiber-ring resonator could lead to optical bistability when illuminated at 1.55μm [1]. The nonlinear effect responsible for this behavior is the nonlinear absorption occurring between the 4I15/2 and the 4I13/2 energy levels. The aim of this paper is to investigate the influence of two physical processes on this optical bistability: (i) excited-state absorption (ESA) and (ii) pair-induced quenching effect.
