Enhanced noise factor for axially inhomogeneous media

Abstract

THE omnipresence of spontaneous emission in a single-mode laser gives rise to a quantum-limited laser linewidth, which reflects the corresponding phase diffusion of the radiation field. Enhanced quantum noise can occur when an inhomogeneous distribution of losses and gain causes the modes of the laser resonator to be non-orthogonal.
