From Rabi oscillations to quantum instability

Abstract

The Rabi oscillations have been considered to be an inherent property of coherent interactions of single atoms with electromagnetic field. Recently, it has been shown [1] that a mean dipole moment in single-atom resonance fluorescence excited by a superposition of coherent states does not display oscillations but rather an exponential growth. Such an unusual evidence of nonclassical properties of Schrödinger-cat states can be observed in high-Q optical and microwave cavities [2].
