Manipulation of multilevel atoms with Doppler-broadened transition lines by the sequence of frequency chirped single laser pulses

Abstract

The inhomogeneous (Doppler-) broadening of the transition lines may cause problems in the laser manipulation schemes which use coherent laser pulses for their realisation. This is true for the schemes using two or more overlapping laser pulses with frequencies being in multiphoton resonance (for example, Raman resonance in the case of the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage scheme [1]) which fail to be effective when the atoms of the ensemble have different Doppler shifts of the transition lines due to their motion.
