Abstract

Salts of AAu(CN)2 (A = K+, Rb+, Cs+, Tetrabutylammonium) in the solid state have an interesting two-dimensional layered structure for the gold atoms. For example, for KAu(CN)2 individual layers of gold atoms at room temperature are separated by 9.2 Å while the nearest neighbor gold distance in a layer is 3.36 Å. When the cation is changed, or the temperature is changed, the Au-Au nearest neighbor separation varies.
