Abstract

Recent reports1,2 by Philips researchers on novel, efficient phosphors for lamp applications highlight the role of Gd3+ as sensitization intermediate in the process of cascade sensitization S→Gd3+→A (where S is a broad-band sensitizers, such as Ce3+ or Bi3+, and A an acceptor, such as a trivalent rare-earth or Mn2+). On investigating Ce, Mn-coactivated Gd(BO2)3 we observed, following excitation at 254 nm, a green emission-band, peaking at ≃530 nm, ≃60% as intense (in brightness units) as current willemite phosphors (Zn2SiO4:Mn) for lamp applications.
