Abstract
The dye ring laser, like other homogeneously broadened two-mode lasers, is predicted to have a steady state with two distinct regions of metastability.1-3 If we write for the probability density of the two-mode intensities I1, I2 where U(I1,I2) is the steady state potential, then U(I1,I2) has the form in dimensionless units where a1, a2 are pump parameters of the two laser modes, and ξ=2 is the mode coupling constant.4 A two-dimensional plot of the surface U(I1,I2) exhibits minima at I1=a1, I2=0, and I1=0, I2=a2 with a saddle point in between.5
