A Linear Total Internal Reflection Spatial Light Modulator and its Application in Optical Information Processing

Abstract

A TIR (Total Internal Reflection) linear spatial light modulator having over five thousand resolvable elements was recently developed for laser printing applications.1,2,3 This device has similarity to many of the integrated optics concepts currently being pursued in that a fringing electric field in an electro-optic crystal is used to modulate light in the vicinity of the crystal surface. This paper describes the operation of this device and shows how it can be used in coherent optical processing.
