Abstract
The coupling theory of Taylor and Yariv [1,2] pointed the way to a number of potentially useful devices using coupled waveguide arrays. In particular the use of multi-waveguide structures for power distribution and switching was proposed [3,4]. The assumptions of this theory are, however, violated for devices of practical interest and alternative strong coupling theories have therefore been developed [5-8].
