Abstract

In an earlier paper1, simple criteria for color correction were derived from the dispersion formulas of Hartmann, Cauchy, Schmidt, Conrady and Buchdahl. These criteria were used to develop a simple method for selecting pairs of optical materials that are suitable for designing lens systems that are color corrected for at least three wavelengths in the spectral band of applications. We have been successful in using the glass combinations selected and identified by this method in the design of color corrected optical systems, which include catadioptric and prism systems as well. Earlier applications of these suitable glass pairs were confined to the design of apochromatic and superachromatic low aperture doublets, multiplets, and moderate aperture objectives of the Petzval types.
