Channel Waveguide Electrooptic Devices for Communications and Information Processing

Abstract

Wide bandwidth and improved switching are expected to be the most important advantages of using integrated optics components and single- mode fibers for Navy communications. It was recognized several years ago that the practical realization of these advantages would require a sizable research and development effort. A program was initiated to solve the critical problems in several areas: injection laser sources, waveguide couplers, modulators, switches, electronic drivers, and receivers. Progress in each of these areas is described below.
