Abstract
Many devices and structures of practical interest in integrated optics basically consist of two evanescently coupled waveguides where the phase match between the waveguides or the coupling between the waveguides changes as a function of distance along the direction of propagation. The operation of this class of devices can be conveniently described in terms of the evolution of the local normal modes of the structure if the changes are gradual, or by power transfer between the local normal modes if the changes are abrupt.
