Realization of small-bend radii in Ti:LiNbO3 waveguides through indiffusion from a stepped MgO layer

Abstract

Low-loss optical waveguide bends are desired to realize integrated-optical devices with practical dimensions. On the basis of InGaAsP/InP, bend radii down to 150 μm are possible.1 However, an important material for integrated optics is LiNbO3 because of its large electro-optical coefficient and easy fabrication process. However, because of the weak confinement by Ti:LiNbO3 waveguides, large bend radii in the range of centimeters must be used.
