Abstract

The question whether two parallel waveguides, separated by a finite spacing, can be decoupled by a suitable distribution of the refractive index, as a function of the transverse coordinates, in the intermediate region,1 has been solved analytically2 as follows. Such a requirement can never be satisfied by scalar waves, but can be satisfied if the vector nature of e.m. waves is properly accounted for.
