Abstract

With the early development of integrated-optic devices in lossy media and semiconductor lasers, the need to understand guiding conditions in complex-index waveguides became clear. Cutoff conditions in complex-index, slab waveguides were first studied by Burke1 and by Schlosser.2 The experimental implementation of gain-guided lasers, antiguide structures, guided-wave absorption sensors, and other devices motivated further theoretical investigations of guiding characteristics and modal parameters in complex slab waveguides.3,4
