Abstract
The highly excited Rydberg states of two-electron atoms below the first ionization limit have been the subject of many recent investigations. Interest is now focusing on studies of excited atoms with both electrons in (highly) excited states. We report the observation of the 5 dnf Rydberg series excited from the thus far unknown 5d21G4 metastable state of barium as part of a study of a series converging to ionization limits above the 6s1/2 limit [42034.902(5) cm−1]. Extremely narrow autoionization linewidths (as low as 10 MHz) have been observed.
