Abstract
Recently the excitonic states in semiconductor microstrucfcures have attracted much attention owing to the enhanced excitonic optical nonlinearity and the fast response time. In semiconductor microstructures of lower dimensionality, the energy levels of carriers become discrete due to the quantum size effect. The oscillator strength becomes concentrated on the sharp transitions of the lower energy and the mechanism of excitonic optical nonlinearity is simply the state filling of these sharp excitonic transitions in contrast to the band filling of continuum states in the bulk material.
