Nonlinear Propagation of Optical Pulses with Few Periods

Abstract

In recent years very short optical pulses were produced, which consist of about three periods[1]. The main feature of such pulses is that the slow varying amplitude approximation is in this case invalid. In this paper we perform a computer simulation of ultrashort light pulse propagation in the dispersive medium with cubic nonlinearity without using this approximation. We also obtain some analytical results, which show that the modified Korteveg-de- Vries equation is applicable for the description of few-periods pulse propagation in the case of weak dispersion. We consider optical breathers as an illustration.
