Abstract

Stimulated Raman scattering in fibers can be used for amplification of optical signals and solitons. A gain as high as 45 dB has been attained.[1] Although the small-signal gain curve[2,3] and the gain saturation at a wavelength[1] have been reported the wavelength dependence of saturation charachteristics has not been reported. We present the results of the gain measurement in a saturation region using two tunable dye lasers. On the other hand, fluoride glass optical fibers are promising for ultra-low-loss fibers in the 2.6 µm region and also for base fibers for rare-earth doping. Although the experiment of SRS in fluoride glass fibers has been reported.[4] the Raman gain coefficient has not been determined. We have measured the saturation characteristics of a fluoride glass fiber and determined the Raman gain coefficient.
