Abstract

Optical elements for atoms are particularly interesting in view of realizing an atomic microprobe and providing elements to build an atom interferometer. An atomic microprobe has the potential of achieving high spatial resolution with minimal damage to the investigated surface, since atoms are uncharged and the kinetic energy can be chosen below 10 meV. Atom interferometers allow novel fundamental experiments, which were not possible with electrons or neutrons. Due to their complex internal structure, atoms also offer the possibility to investigate resonant light-atom interactions and effects of spontaneous emission in atom interferometry.
