Abstract

A promising method for achieving Bose- Einstein condensation of alkali atoms is evaporative cooling in a magnetic trap.1,2 In order to achieve a sufficiently high thermalization rate for evaporative cooling, we are developing a way to "pre-cool" the 87Rb atoms by cycling them between two trapped states.
