Observation of enhanced exciton binding energy in GaAs quantum wires by using a magnetophotoiuminescence measurement

Abstract

Excitons confined in quantum wires (QWRs) are of great interest because of their 1-D character. Investigations for quantum wells (QWLs) have indicated enhancement of 2-D exciton binding energy with decreasing thickness of QWLs. 1 In contrast to the case of QWLs, larger enhancement of exciton binding energy is expected in QWRs. To investigate enhancement of binding energy of excitons in QWRs, we performed magnetophotoiuminescence (M-PL) measurements for GaAs/Al0.4Ga0.6As QWRs with various sizes.
