A Rapid, Simple Means of Testing Kinetic Visual Fields in Young Children

Abstract

Because of the difficulty in handling young children, and in maintaining their fixation, routine perimetry is rarely performed in the clinic. With no modification, the commercially available Canon Fundus Photo-Perimeter allows ready measurements of visual fields in young children. To date, we have tested children from four to eight years of age. We are able to measure three isopters in a fifteen minute period, even in four year old children, using this device coupled with an ordinary VCR unit. We believe the method could be extended to include cooperative three year olds, with little difficulty.
