Perceptual Adaptation to Distortions Produced by Meridional Magnifying Lenses

Abstract

Many patients report perceptual distortion and symptoms of discomfort when spectacle lenses are first worn or when a significant change is made in the prescription. Clinical observations indicate that, after a period of lens wear, most patients experience less distortion, suggesting that adaptation has occurred. The rapidity and completeness of this adaptation depends apparently upon the type of spectacles worn (and, hence, the distortions induced), as well as characteristics of the individual that, as yet, are not well understood.
