Abstract
Traditional restoration schemes aim to provide 100% restoration in the event of a single failure; multiple (simultaneous) failures are assumed to have such low probability that they can be ignored. This assumption does not hold for networks with mission critical applications that have stringent survivability requirements. In this study, we propose restoration mechanisms that are based on combining the link- and path-based restoration schemes to generate a family of hybrid procedures that maximize the overall network availability in the face of multiple failures. We also investigate the minimal augmentation to an existing network infrastructure necessary in order to meet the required network availability.
