Abstract
The behaviour of a periodically amplified soliton is well described as a stable soliton multiplied on a fast varying function (typically the decay and amplification of the signal), provided that the period ZA of the fast varying function is much shorter than the soliton period Z0 [1,2]. The stability criterion ZA/Z0<<1 is difficult to sustain in high bit-rate systems, where Z0 becomes very small (few km). Both numerically and experimentally, violation of this criterion is reported to result in instability [1,3].
