Abstract
Tetragonal chalcopyrite-structure semiconductor crystals have acquired a niche within the realm of nonlinear optics (NLO) as second order NLO materials in the 2 μm to 20 μm wavelength infra-red region [1]. Examples include AgGaS2, AgGaSe2, ZnGeP2, CdGeAs2 and HgGa2S4. Compared with other NLO crystals, chalcopyrite-structure crystals are characterized by high nonlinearities and low damage thresholds. The latter quality makes them ill-suited to frequency-converting powerful laser beams, which is why they tend to be applied only in the infra-red region, where the few alternative crystals suffer from similar problems.
