Abstract

Narrow tapered fibres of indefinite length (eg, 2 microns diameter, 1 metre long) are demonstrated as nonlinear optical media. They broaden femtosecond pulses from an unamplified Ti:sapphire laser into supercontinuum with an unprecedentedly flat spectrum.
