Giant Kerr-type nonlinearities using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)

Abstract

Giant χ3 coefficients for cross-phase modulation are obtained in a scheme using EIT. Conditional phase shifts ≈ π occur at power levels corresponding to less than 1 photon/ns.
