Spectral gain behavior of Er-doped fiber with extremely high aluminum concentration

Abstract

Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) are very promising as high gain and low noise optical amplifiers for single-mode fiber communication systems in the 1.55 µm wavelength band. However, wavelength dependence of the gain remains a subject of investigation in some applications, such as long haul transmission with cascaded amplifiers(1) or WDM systems(2). It is well-known that codoping aluminum in the core of the erbium-doped fiber (EDF) is effective to broaden the gain spectrum of the EDFAs.
