Abstract

We summarize recent results in coherent optical communications using semiconductor lasers. Special emphasis is placed on trade offs between system designs and characteristics of currently available devices. Projections on future system characteristics and performance are made based on trends of device and circuit developments. Examples are drawn from fiber systems as well as space systems.
