Abstract
Tunable birefringent spectral filters are used in many applications which require narrow transmitted bandwidths with high optical power throughput. A rigorous electromagnetic analysis of bulk birefringent networks will provide the basis for a more complete understanding of these filters and may also lead to new optimal network architectures. A similar rigorous analysis of the folded Sole filter has been previously presented by Yeh.1 Analyses of other network architectures, particularly multiple-pass birefringent networks, and an explicit discussion of the multiple-beam interference effects are presented.
