Characteristics of the gain in higher harmonic operation of a free-electron laser

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

In a storage ring free-electron laser we find that using higher harmonic operation, we can not only obtain a shorter wavelength, but also get more gain than when using fundamental harmonic operation at the same wavelength, when the wiggler parameter k ⩾ 2. We also find that the experimental condition of the higher harmonic operation can be easily realized.
