Abstract

An integrated optical notch filter formed from two DFBGs in series is studied in detail. Tunable optical notch filters have been proposed,1 but here we consider notch filters in nonlinear optical waveguides. The notch filter is modeled using coupled-mode theory where absorption, detuning, and nonlinear saturation are included as model parameters. The limitations of both optical absorption and nonlinear saturation on device performance are presented. Also, it is shown that detuning provides some advantages and introduces some new effects due to spatial instabilities in the grating structure.
