Evaluation of functional vision of 257 cataract patients using the Vistech sensitivity chart

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Visual acuity is still the main measure used to quantify visual loss from cataracts by medical, legal, and government institutions. However, much research shows that acuity alone is not a proper measure of vision loss due to cataracts. Contrast sensitivity measurements have proved increasingly important for determining functional vision loss. Although previous contrast sensitivity research used computer-controlled video systems, more recently, a new contrast sensitivity test, the Vision Contrast Test System (VCTS), has been developed to measure functional visual capability for routine clinical testing of contrast sensitivity. Initial results of the VCTS for a wide variety of visual pathologies revealed contrast sensitivity losses simitar to those found using computer-controlled video systems.
