Two-dimensional detection of ultraweak bioluminescence using a single-photon image acquisition system

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Ultraweak light emission phenomena of various living organisms and tissues are now attracting a great deal of interest. However, an adequate means of obtaining information about the distribution of such ultraweak bioluminescence within a specimen is lacking. We are currently investigating an improved ultraweak photon imaging system for this purpose. Earlier low-intensity light imaging systems have relied on the vidicon. A recently developed system (PIAS, Hamamatsu Photonics) employing a position sensitive detector in conjunction with a microchannel plate produces lower noise and significantly increased resolution.
