Optical expert systems using spatial light modulators

Abstract

A general approach to using spatial light modulators in expert systems and in related Al methods is discussed.1 A matrix knowledge representation is exploited for generalizations and abstractions from the vast amount of page-oriented holograms. The operation is a standard optical matrix addition and thresholding. The matrix addition represents a subliminal recall to several query responses, and the thresholding operation stands for a high-pass abstraction. In this sense, the addition can blur the content as if it were a low-pass filter for the generalization operation. Such an open set logic argument, namely, adducing, is what optics can do best. An example of data fusion is used to illustrate the generalization and abstraction concept by successfully removing the alias ambiguity from multiple queries. Thus, the information capacity of such a system can far exceed the capacity of the spatial light modulator itself.
