Abstract

We have shown previously1 that, given the wave aberration of the eye, one may compute the retinoscopic reflex for known degrees of defocus of the eye and eccentricity of the light source relative to the retinoscopic aperture. We now describe a theoretical computational method by which the coefficients of a wave aberration polynomial may be recovered from the distribution of light at the subject’s pupil in retinoscopic illumination. Practical applications of this method for finding the wave aberration of the eye using photoretinoscopy are discussed.
