Abstract
Horner and Gianino1 suggested a phase-only filter of unit modulus as a correlation filter for pattern recognition. This filter consists of the phase of the classical matched filter and Is commonly referred to as “the” phase-only filter (POF). The POF has the potential of 100% light throughput efficiency, and it has been demonstrated to yield sharp correlation peaks in pattern recognition applications. Kumar and Bahri2 have shown that the POF is the optimum unit modulus filter with respect to the SNR. The peak-to-sldelobe ratio for a filter is a measure of performance with respect to false targets and dynamic range. The authors suggest that the optimal bandlimited unit modulus filter should maximize
