Acoustooptic deflectors at cryogenic temperatures

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Acoustooptic deflectors that operate over the 3-300-K temperature range have been constructed. The acoustic attenuation of the L[001] mode of TeO2 and the L[100] mode of GaP has been measured, using these devices, at frequencies between 0.7 and 1.3 GHz and at temperatures spanning 3-300 K. These measurements show a significant decrease in the acoustic attenuation of ~X6 when the device temperature is decreased from room temperature to ~ 10 K. More than that the measurements show that the frequency dependence of the acoustic attenuation changes from nominally quadratic at room temperatures to almost none at 10 K.
