Practical f/1 infrared gradient-index objective

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

An f/1 objective lens for use in the infrared in the wavelength band from 7.5 to 11.75 μm has been designed using practical infrared gradient-index materials. Designs utilizing both axial and radial gradients have been completed. The resulting lenses are well color corrected and use fewer elements than conventional designs with the same specifications. Benefits of the new designs are lighter weight, easier assembly, and improved performance. A prototype of the axial gradient design is being constructed and tested.
