Abstract

The guiding layer of a planar waveguide may be naturally biaxial or may become biaxial (e.g., in an electrooptic modulator). The goals of the present work are (1) to determine the effect of principal axes orientation on the effective index of a guided mode and (2) to present a quantitative classification scheme for hybrid modes in biaxial waveguides.
