Induced absorption in thin films

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Induced transmission filters with buried metal layers have been developed in the past to produce interesting filter characteristics. We have employed similar concepts to design filters that would show total absorption in 5-10-nm thick metal and alloy film. We report typical examples of such designs with intermetallic and semiconductor films and discuss potential applications, particularly in relation to thin film media for optical data storage.
