Abstract
Inverse scattering techniques were applied to the detection and identification of buried, flat dielectric objects. This problem resembles the determination of refractive index profiles for an inhomogeneous layer between two homogeneous regions. However, it differs because the objects have finite lateral extent. For coherent microwaves at discrete frequencies between 300 and 1100 MHz, reflected fields were measured with a monostatic antenna that was in the object's near field to reduce refraction spreading.
