Abstract

Nonradiating source distributions have special significance in connection with uniqueness of solutions of various inverse problems. While nonradiating scalar source distributions and methods for specifying them have been treated in a number of papers, relatively little is known on nonradiating electromagnetic source distributions.1 In this paper we consider localized electromagnetic charge-current distributions which produce a nonradiating field inside the source region but do not generate any field outside. Our treatment is based on the expansion of the current distributions and of the fields which they generate into a series of vector spherical harmonics. We review the representation of the currents and the fields and describe a procedure for specifying a class on nonradiating electromagnetic sources.
