Various beam propagation techniques for strongly guiding structures

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

We analyze losses in semiconductor rib waveguide Y-junctions with a direct method involving repeated multiplication by exponentiated block diagonal matrices, the split operator finite difference and finite element algorithms, and the standard beam propagation procedure. Our calculations assume the validity of the Fresnel approximation. While all the techniques yield acceptable results, their efficiency, simplicity, accuracy and regions of applicability differ.
