Abstract

Wavelength division multiplexers (WDMs) with a large number of channels and extremely low cross-coupling losses (less than −35 dB), based on holographic optical elements in 3-D and planar geometries are proposed. The basic architecture of holographic WDMs consists of volume holograms in 3-D or waveguide geometry. Based on the optical performance of high efficiency holographic technology1 developed at POC, the losses per channel can be <1 dB. The number of channels in both multiplexing and demultiplexing modes can exceed ten with channel separation between 10 and 30 nm. The multichannel WDMs with low loss and low crosstalk are particularly desirable in the next-generation fiber optics local area network applications.
