Generalized exclusive-OR modules as a natural basis for fiber logic systems

Abstract

A generalized-exclusive-OR (GEO) module is a logical representation of ultrafast all-optical soliton-dragging gates that can be used for design purposes. We show that a GEO module is Boolean and connectivity-complete for a time-division-multiplexed system. Two GEO modules, can be interconnected as NOR and AND gates or broadcast and routing switches. A bit serial counter can be implemented with four GEO modules, and a time slot interchanger can be devised with two or three modules. Because GEO modules lead to minimal component implementation of some basic functions, they may be the natural basis for designing fiber-based logic systems.
