Abstract
Daylight single probe and differential probe rawinsonde data are a factor of 10 to 100 larger than nocturnal launch data at heights of 10-15 km. Recent joint optical and balloon measurements reveal no optical counterpart coincident with the thermal probe results. It appears that the factor of 10 enhancement in daylight atmospheric profiles of is an artifact of solar heating on the measurement system. Experimental results of direct solar heating of the probe and balloon wake effects are presented along with the optical data.
